The project was presented in the daily science communication radio program “90 segundos de ciência” in “Antena 1”. You can listen the interview here.
RemPharm in "Laboração Contínua"
The RemPharm project was presented to the local community by the journal “Diário de Aveiro” in the section “Laboração Contínua” (a joint project from “Diário de Aveiro” and “Fábrica da Ciência” that presents research topics to the general public. The article can be seen here.

Events
The RemPharm team will be present in the congress “International Conference on Emerging Contaminants”, to be held in Oslo, Norway, from 25th to 28th june 2018. Patrícia Silva and Guilaine Jaria will present two oral communications entitled “Conversion of paper mill sludge into activated carbons for the removal of pharmaceuticals from contaminated effluents” and “Adsorption of pharmaceuticals from ultra-pure and waste water onto granular activated carbon produced from primary paper mill sludge”, respectively.
UA Open Campus 2018
The project was present in the 2nd edition of “UA Open Campus”, from 22nd to 24th March 2018. RemPharm was one of the projects displayed in the science and technology exhibition that was one of the activities offered by this event. Main audience included students and teachers from secondary schools.
5th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management
Patrícia Silva e Guilaine Jaria presented two oral communications in the “5th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management”, held in Athens, Greece, from 21st – 24th June 2017. The communications were entitled “Converting wastes into resources: the repeatability of carbon adsorbents’ production from paper mill sludge” and “Production of a paper mill sludge-based activated carbon and application in the removal of pharmaceuticals from water”.
UA Open Campus 2017
The project was present in the 1st edition of “UA Open Campus”, from 10th – 12th May 2017. RemPharm was one of the projects displayed in the science and technology exhibition that was one of the activities offered by this event. Main audience included students and teachers from secondary schools.
3rd Analytical Chemistry Symposium
The team of the RemPharm project organized the “3rd Analytical Chemistry Symposium - Alternative technologies for pharmaceuticals removal from water” that was held in 24th May 2017, University of Aveiro, Portugal. The Symposium, aimed at discussing alternative water treatment technologies, gathered approximately 100 participants from academia and industry. The program of the event can be seen here.
Sustainable waste management course
The RemPharm team was selected to participate in the Climate-KIC course "Sustainable Waste Management: Enhancing the use of Secondary Raw Materials" that took place in Budapest (01-02 December 2016). This professional course was an excellent oportunity to learn more about Circular Economy and waste management challenges and to present our project to all the participants and coaches.
Visit of Prof. Jane Catherine Ngila
The research group recently established a new collaboration with Professor J.C. Ngila, from the Applied Chemistry Department of the University of Johannesburg (South Africa). Prof. Ngila visited the Chemistry Department of the University of Aveiro in November 2016 and talked about “Biosorbents and Photocatalytic Nanocomposite Membranes for Removal of Metals and Degradation of Chlorinated Organics in Water”.
TechDays 2016
TechDays is the largest portuguese forum of technology. RemPham was part of the exhibitor of the University of Aveiro in 2016 edition, showing for the first time to the general public a propotype of the developed work.
Conference on Circular Economy in "Instituto de Educação e Cidadania - IEC"
Vânia Calisto presented an invited talk in “Instituto de Educação e Cidadania”, Mamarrosa, Oliveira do Bairro (Portugal), in 12th April 2018. The talk, entitled “Economia Circular: Moda ou Inevitabilidade? – Aplicação em sistemas de tratamento de água”, was aimed to highlight the importance of leaving the Linear Economy Model and move towards a Circular approach.
2nd International Conference on Pollutant Toxic Ions and Molecules
The RemPharm project was represented in the “2nd International Conference on Pollutant Toxic Ions and Molecules – PTIM II” that was held in Caparica, Portugal, from 6th to 9th November 2017. Vânia Calisto presented an invited oral communication entitled “Why waste wastes? – Using industrial residues to treat wastewaters”.
TechDays 2017
Similarly to 2016, RemPham was part of the exhibitor of the University of Aveiro in TechDays, 12th – 14th September 2017 (Parque de Feiras e Exposições, Aveiro, Portugal). A prototype of a fixed-bed column system was presented to the public, along with a brief explanation of our work. The exhibitor was visited by a wide audience, particularly schools and families.
I Reunião do Grupo do Carbono
The RemPharm team participated in the “I Reunião do Grupo do Carbono” that was held in 12th – 13th June 2017 in Porto, Portugal. The meeting was organized by “Grupo do Carbono” from “Sociedade Portuguesa de Química” and was aimed at discussing the last advances in the science and applications of carbon materials.
Materiais 2017
The RemPharm team participated in the Congress “Materiais” (VIII International Symposium on Materials), held in Aveiro, Portugal, from 9th to 12th April 2017. Guilaine Jaria presented the oral communication “Production and characterisation of alternative activated carbons – a full factorial design approach” and José Pereira presented the poster “Computational optimization of bio-adsorbents for the removal of pharmaceuticals from water”. A prototype of the project was also displayed in the Show Case of the congress.
Green Business Week 2017
RemPharm was present in 2017 edition of the "Green Business Week" that took place in Lisboa, Portugal, in 16th March 2017. The project was presented to the audience through a poster and a pitch communication (“Porquê desperdiçar resíduos? - Utilização de resíduos industriais para o tratamento de águas residuais”).
Business2Sea - 2016
The RemPharm project was present in the Business2Sea 2016. This event is organized anually by "Fórum Oceano" and is an exhibiton of products, services and technologies related with the oceans. The research team presented this project to the community with the exhibition of a prototype and an oral communication. You can see the information displayed in the exhibitor here.
European Researchers' Night
RemPharm exhibited a prototype of the undergoing work in the European Researchers' Night 2016 in "Fábrica da Ciência" in Aveiro. It was a great experience with a massive public participation and great opportunity to disseminate our science to public of all ages. We expect to participate in future editions of this excellent event.
